Review: O’Reilly Upgrading to PHP 5
Posted on 08.15.05 by templeton @ 7:44 pm

With the release of PHP 5 my first and foremost concern was with backwards compatibility with my old PHP 4 scripts. Will the new version run my old scripts and if so, how well? How much work is ahead of me to make sure my current scripts don’t suddenly stop working? This turned out to be my only nit pick with the book because Adam only mentions PHP 4 compatibility mode in passing. While this book is about upgrading to PHP 5, I felt this was worth more than a glancing mention. Though Adam didn’t spend any time on backwards compatibility, he did make sure to include instructions for installing PHP 5 along side PHP 4 so that you can get up to speed without losing all your old scripts. Aside from this minor sticking point “Upgrading to PHP 5” doesn’t disappoint.

“Upgrading to PHP 5” managed to answer all my major concerns and provide plenty of side by side comparisons of the code. PHP 5 was a pretty major upgrade to the language and Adam covers the bases very well. The chapter on Object Oriented Programming was excellent and helped me get my head around a subject I often struggle with, me being a very procedural programmer. PHP 5 also had some fairly major updates to its MySQL and XML support, both of which Adam goes into great detail about. The most exciting part for me was MySQL sub-selects and transactions and Adam covers those well here.

SPV C550 - The New Smartphone
Posted on 08.15.05 by templeton @ 7:26 pm

The SPV C550 mobile phone is the successor to the SPV C500, which has been described as “the world’s best” Smartphone. So how does the latest version of the Smartphone compare to its predecessor?. Is the world’s fastest car uncomfortable? Is the world’s tallest building an eyesore? Is the world’s latest Smartphone any good?

Looking Good: The SPV C550 certainly looks small, with much of its size taken up with a large colour screen. In fact, if it wasn’t for the screen, you could easily mistake it for a conventional mobile phone. The sleek exterior hides truly exceptional functionality with an easy to use menu and navigation system.

Great Functionality: The SPV C550 brings the familiar Microsoft Windows environment to all aspects of the phone. You can check your email using Outlook. You can browse the web using Internet Explorer. You can listen to MP3 music using the Windows Media Player. You can even chat with friends using instant messaging, and the 1.3 megapixel digital camera allows you to take crystal clear photos.

The Right Connection: When you need to get files from one device to another, the SPV C550 presents you with the latest Bluetooth and GPRS technology. In addition, there’s the clever Backup service, which stores your mobile’s data on the network in case anything dreadful happens to your handset.

Here comes ZOTOB & Copa.A
Posted on 08.15.05 by templeton @ 6:55 pm

A new Internet virus targeting recently uncovered flaws in Microsoft Corp.’s Windows operating system is circulating on the Internet, an anti-virus computer software maker said on Monday.

The ZOTOB virus appeared shortly after the world’s largest software maker warned of three newly found “critical” security flaws in its software last week, including one that could allow attackers to take complete control of a computer.

Trend Micro Inc. said that the worm exploits security holes in Microsoft’s Windows 95, 98, ME, NE, 2000 and XP platforms and can give computer attackers remote access to affected systems.

“Hundreds of infection reports were sighted in the United States and Germany,” Tokyo-based Trend Micro said.

But computer security engineers at Microsoft said that the worm is only targeting Windows 2000 and not the other versions of Windows.

“It only affected Windows 2000,” said Stephen Toulouse, a manager at Microsoft’s Security Response Center. “So far its has shown a very limited impact—we’re not seeing any widespread impact to the Internet, but we remain vigilant.”

The latest virus drops a copy of itself into the Windows system folder as [ Read more…]

Intel Set To Unveil Next-Gen Processors
Posted on 08.13.05 by templeton @ 1:41 am

Intel is set to announce a broad shift from the classic Pentium architecture to more power-efficient chips Latest News about Chip originally designed for mobile-computing requirements. Reducing heat while increasing processing power are key elements in what Intel CEO Paul Otellini calls the company’s “next-generation architecture.”

Details of the new chip designs—along with information about Intel’s shift in focus—are planned for the company’s Developer Forum in San Francisco at the end of August. It will be Otellini’s first public speech since taking the Intel CEO post in May.

The chips, codenamed Conroe for desktops, Merom for notebooks and Woodcrest for servers, should be available in the middle of 2006.

As processor power increases, so does the need to cool the many transistors packed onto the silicon squares. In October, Intel axed a faster version of thePentium 4 Latest News about Pentium 4, deciding that the chip created too much heat. With 80 percent of the microprocessor market, Intel is urgently seeking to develop new technologies to try to keep its market lead on competing processor products from AMD Latest News about AMD.

OSX on non apple branded x86 hardware
Posted on 08.13.05 by templeton @ 1:39 am

Hackers have managed to crack Mac OS X for Intel to make it work on non-approved PC hardware.

Macbidouille has even published a video clip showing the exploit.

Hackers successfully managed to make the OS run on a PC notebook Mitac 8050D, which employs an Intel Pentium processor.

The video shows that Apple’s OS starts up very fast on such systems. The website writes: “We can see the “About this Mac” panel, Apple System Profiler and CHUD prefpane showing information on the processor (frequency, cache and more).”

In a recent opinion piece, columnist John Dvorak speculated that Apple may be trying to keep OS X off standard PC systems in order to prevent raising the level of competition with Microsoft; keep diehard Mac users happy, and to allow Apple to pretend to fight the OS getting out in the wild.

That last move would let the company say: “There was nothing we could do. This is the OS that people apparently want and need.”

Dvorak speculates that Apple will then announce a packaged, supported and tested product designed to run Mac OS X on a variety of PC systems, including older machines that are not supported by Windows Vista.

This, he speculates, would also be cheaper to buy than Vista.
